pipelineNew Prime Minister, Philemon Yang, last Friday had discussions with officials of the International Advisory Group of Chad-Cameroon Petroleum Development and Pipeline Project.

The Chairman of the International Advisory Group of the Chad-Cameroon Petroleum Development and Pipeline Project, Mamadou Lamine Loum has recommended that the governments of Chad and Cameroon continue to handle the social and environmental risks of the pipeline project with diligence and vigilance. He urged the two governments to plough back the fallouts of the project to improve the living conditions of their peoples.

Mamadou Lamine Loum Friday, July 5, led the International Advisory Group’s delegation for an audience with Cameroon’s new Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang. Talking to journalists after the audience, he said they were honoured as the first group to be received in audience by Philemon Yang and added, “We congratulated the Prime Minister on his appointment and expressed our wishes of success in his daunting task”.

Concerning the Chad-Cameroon Pipeline Project, Lamine Loum said the mission of the International Advisory Group set up in 2001, was to give independent advice to the governments of Chad, Cameroon and the World Bank. He said the mission was drawing to a close, stating that the project has to continue for the next 20 to 25 years. Mr Lamine Loum disclosed that the audience with the new Prime Minister was to sensitise and brief him on the different issues he has to know in order to keep abreast with the project to ensure success.

The discussions with the Prime Minister came on the heels of a series of workshops the Advisory Group had with stakeholders of the project both in Chad and Cameroon. The Advisory Group’s chair said evaluations during the workshops enabled them to reach an agreement on the different observations and analyses on the challenges that need to be addressed up to the end of the project. “We arrived at the conclusion that Cameroon and Chad have the capacity to manage mega projects and that the pipeline project is a good success”, Lamine Loum said recommending permanent dialogue between the stakeholders of the project. He cited the Prime Minister as having promised to work with the ministries concerned with the Pipeline project to ensure success.

Familiarisation meeting

On the heels of the audience, Philemon Yang had the first familiarisation meeting with the senior officials of the cabinet of the Prime Minister’s Office, led by the Director of Cabinet, Paul Njie Meoto. In addressing the officials, Mr Yang recommended cohesion, solidarity and team work as the key to success in accomplishing the mission of moving the nation forward. He further expressed his readiness to receive useful information from the officials.
